Surfing? In INDIA??

In the spirit of this week’s ongoing “I can’t believe this exists in India” theme, check out Couple things:

  1. I can’t believe there is a surf club in India.
  2. I can’t believe it is founded by people from Jacksonville Beach, FL!
  3. Dude. Seriously.
  4. W
  5. T
  6. F
  7. ?!

I’m there.

Those of you who know me, probably know that I have never geeked-out to the point where I have felt compelled to write “ZOMFG!!” Until today. Yes my dear (probably long-gone) readers – I have found sushi in Delhi. It started much like any other time I’m craving sushi:

Jesse: “Know any good restaurants?”
Friend: “Sure. What kind of food do you like? Spicy?”
Jesse: “I was thinking more along the lines of ‘Sushi’.”

Usually the Sushi part of the conversation dies right there, laughed off with a sarcastic “yeah, right.” But not this time.

Friend: “Oh I know just the place.”
Jesse: “…”
Friend: “What?”
Jesse: “I’m sorry? Did you just say something other than ‘Haha, OK, but seriously?’

This took place at about 1:30PM. I was giving a presentation to a bunch of recent graduates about our company and about the gaming industry at 2:15. I couldn’t stop thinking or talking about sushi.

Jesse: “Are you serious? They have, like, wasabi?”
Friend: “Yes.”
Jesse: “Soy souce?”
Friend: “Yes.”
Jesse: “Ginger?”
Friend: “Yes!!”
Jesse: “Raw fish?? No canned tuna?”
Friend: “I’m telling you, it’s the real deal! You get a whole plate of sashimi for 500 rupees!”
Jesse: “OK. Look. TII… but I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic.”
Friend: “TII?”
Jesse: “Nevermind.”

By the time my presentation was over I was practically foaming at the mouth for sashimi. The sushi place didn’t open until 6:30 (1.5 hours from then), so I fought my hunger with two other foods I had NO IDEA EXISTED IN INDIA:

  • Banana nut bread (delicious)
  • Jelly donut (almost right!)

Skipping to the good part. We arrived at the restaurant pictured above and I knew, just KNEW, that this place was the real deal. My feelings were confirmed when we walked inside and I saw an actual Japanese man. Yes, folks – the first I have seen in Delhi. My heart skipped a beat, but this was nothing. By the time we were finished eating I was the only white guy in the restaurant, and my friend was the only Indian guy. The rest of the diners were all Japanese people – probably every Japanese person in Delhi. This is what we ate, for about $20 USD:

Sorry for the crappy color of my camera phone. It was really amazing! The cool part is that they don’t have salmon because they can’t get it fresh enough. Instead, they had tuna and marlin! I have never had marlin but it is actually amazing – sort of fatty. It tastes better than tuna to me and is second only to salmon.

If anyone else wants to go here and eat, they have fresh sashimi every Friday and Saturday. You’ll see me there at least once a week! Here’s the contact info:
