Happy Diwali!

Diwali lights at ATS

It’s that time of year again – where Christmas-style decorations are combined with 4th of July-style festivities. I still don’t really “get” this holiday, but it’s the biggest Hindu festival of the year.

I’m slightly confused by the meaning behind it because the Indians are really up front about asking you for their Diwali gift. I’m not just talking about friends – our new security guard who has worked at the apartment for about a week literally followed us to our door the other night with his hand out asking for a gift. We gave him 100 rupees and he wanted MORE! Bizarre.

A friend told us that this is because Diwali is all about money and finances. People pray for financial blessings and all of the commercialism is because of a belief that “the more you spend, the more you get”. People even put little foot steps of the financial god leading up to their house and to their safe or whatever. Incidentally, this is a great way for thieves to know exactly where to strike. :]

The layout of our apartment complex amplifies the sounds of fireworks from every direction. It sounds like a war zone outside! I’ll post some video soon.

Exigent Party!

From Exigent_Party

We had a great party tonight to celebrate a few birthdays and Diwali. The entire studio was invited to our HR manager’s house, where we had some great food, a hired DJ with a huge-mongous sound system, and the usual pool table and lots of drinks. It was a great bonding experience for everyone involved!
