Holi Office Insanity, Batman!

The Indian festival of Holi got an early start at our office today. My employees gleefully covered me with colors. This is what they call “playing” Holi. Last year I was in a bad mood and didn’t play with them, so they were especially excited and messy when I embraced the absurdity of it all today! Check out the pics.

Happy Diwali!

Diwali lights at ATS

It’s that time of year again – where Christmas-style decorations are combined with 4th of July-style festivities. I still don’t really “get” this holiday, but it’s the biggest Hindu festival of the year.

I’m slightly confused by the meaning behind it because the Indians are really up front about asking you for their Diwali gift. I’m not just talking about friends – our new security guard who has worked at the apartment for about a week literally followed us to our door the other night with his hand out asking for a gift. We gave him 100 rupees and he wanted MORE! Bizarre.

A friend told us that this is because Diwali is all about money and finances. People pray for financial blessings and all of the commercialism is because of a belief that “the more you spend, the more you get”. People even put little foot steps of the financial god leading up to their house and to their safe or whatever. Incidentally, this is a great way for thieves to know exactly where to strike. :]

The layout of our apartment complex amplifies the sounds of fireworks from every direction. It sounds like a war zone outside! I’ll post some video soon.

Happy Belated Birthday, 2007!

New Year’s Eve in Gainesville, FLBasking in the Florida Sun!

Boarding in Big Bear

So I guess I have a lot to cover since my mid-December entry. I have been back to the States to visit and do all sorts of awesome stuff I have been really missing since being in India (like snowboarding, above). Rachel got the chance to meet the rest of my family, and we explored Gainesville and St. Augustine. I’d love to talk about each and every picture, but I just don’t have the time! So here’s a link to 167 of them.

Since I have been back from vacation I haven’t had time to update my blog (notice a trend?). It’s not that I’m blogaphobic or anything, I just hate writing insignificant little entries without any pictures or video to back them up. I’m a perfectionist, which I guess is pretty much the antithesis of what blogging represents.

One of the first things I did when I returned was to attend NASSCOM: Animation and Gaming India 2007. I was fortunate to be on a panel discussion entitled “Making the transition from film to gaming.” It was a lot of fun and I got to meet some great people in the Indian Animation and Gaming industry.

On the panel at NASSCOM

Since I have been back in Noida we have really been focusing on our pipeline for art development and client delivery, and I really think 2007 is going to be the “Year of Exigent!”

Last weekend we had a great time out and about in Noida, and I do have some pictures and video to support that… I’ll try to post another entry tomorrow.

Happy Diwali Everybody!

Tomorrow is one of the biggest holidays of the year in India: Diwali. You can read about it here. The interesting thing is that it is celebrated by 3 different religions in India, for different reasons! Festivities-wise it is like a combination of Christmas and the Fourth of July. Lots of presents, fireworks, and family bonding. Pretty crazy! I’m going to go sit on the roof tomorrow night and see how many fireworks I can see.

We had a “pooja” for the new floor that we are on to commemorate its operational readiness and bless it. It was pretty interesting, what with the chanting by the Hindu priest guy and all. I got a red mark on my forehead that symbolises the “mind’s eye” or something. I also got a red string around my wrist to ward off evil. We’ll see if it works.

In other news, I miss my family and my girlfriend – and I still have 2 months to go until my own big Christmas holiday! :(

Lots of work…

Well it seems like it has been forever since I have last posted. We’ve been pretty busy with interviews and trying to find the right artists to start training at our studio. Paul came to visit for a few days all the way from NYC to check out the operation and do some planning. We had a great time hanging out at nights, too.

Whaley left today to head back to the States. He’ll be gone for about 2 months tying up loose ends and getting ready to move his family here. He was pretty emotional about leaving… he loves this place. Garland was supposed to leave today as well (with Esther), but he has extended his stay until the 15th to make sure the company finishes getting set up. We still have to finish the incorporation and set up bank accounts for everyone.

Also, it looks like I’m back to getting the Bajaj Avenger. In fact, everyone is going to get an Avenger except for Albert who wants a scooter. As soon as the company bank account it set up we’re heading down to the Bajaj dealer to make the purchases! Everyone is really excited.

Oh and, Happy Birthday Bree and Dad! I wish I was there to celebrate with you guys. I promise I’ll bring you something nice back from India soon. :)

Oh, and Happy 4th to my fellow countrymen everywhere!
